If looks can kill, I'm a murderer? =(
'Do not judge a book by its cover' goes the famous phrase...
But sadly, we still do most of the time... And the point I'm trying to get here is, we judge a person's mood by the look on his/her face... e.g.
1) Random student trudging along school alone on a gloomy monday morning = I'm damn sian
2) Random classmate who couldn't stop smiling after receiving a test script = My score's good... Ha!
3) Random canteen auntie who didn't smile at you when she collected money from you for your yong tau foo = what a grumpy old woman...
Although our first instinct may be right in many circumstances, I believe the interpretation of facial expression is wrong in just as many... perhaps the above examples may be simply and less judgementally interpreted as 1) there's no 1 to talk to me now so why should i have any facial expression? 2) I have a cheek cramp... issit a crime to smile? 3) Just tired... yawnz
And now I shall relate a real-life example of a wrong interpretation of facial expression... Which! Just happened to me this morning... =(
As I was walking to the classroom for my tut this morning, I opened a glassdoor to the row of classrooms... There were 2 guys following closely behind me... Being the courteous (though not always friendly but good enough) person I always am, I held the door open for them... But I guess I closed the door too fast and it kinda hit 1 guy... I heard 'ouch' but I didn't turn back to look... Shortly after, I heard this conversation between the 2 guys:
Guy who got hit:
How come that girl in front looks as if we offended her ar?
Guy who's the friend of the guy who got hit:
Aiyah nowadays all girls are like that...
Of course, being the nice person I always am, I didn't respond to these jibes... But HEY! what's his problem manz... It's his fault that he didn't reach out fast enough to hold the door... Not as if I slammed the door on him on purpose... However, this is not the first time people thought I looked as if the whole world owes me sth... Sometimes, even close friends thought so even when my mood clearly wasn't what was reflected on my face... Boo Hoo
After a load of rubbish, erm hmm...
I'm not a murderer... I'm friendly! =(
