I wish I knew how to quit you
'I wish I knew how to quit you', so said Jack Twist to Ennis Del Mar at the end of the last of their twice a year 'fishing trips'... I read somewhere that this line qualifies for one of the cheesiest lines of the oscar year along with the 'you have to stop a man with one look' thingy in that hollywood movie about japanese geishas acted by chinese thespians...
However, do not judge a movie by its (seemingly) cheesy lines... I personally thought that the scene where this line was uttered was one of the most moving in the movie... Brokeback mountain is definitely not just a movie about 2 gay men in love and roaring to bed each other at the nearest opportunity... It is, if you take away the fact that the 2 man in love are in fact both men, a story about 2 people who try to come to terms with a love which will probably never see daylight...
Ennis Del Mar, as portrayed by Heath Ledger in the movie, is a man whom I think many people can identify with... It's not about the him being gay thing that most people can identify with... It's more about a reluctance to admit or pursue something which you want so badly because of some reason or another... Which is exactly what Ennis Del Mar is all about... Refusing to pursue a future together with Jack Twist consumed his life and basically left him in eventual regret... Another golden line from the movie: 'If you can't fix it, you gotta learn to stand it'... However, most of the time in life, situations which we can't fix can get really hard to stand and when that happens, it's usually too late to try to fix it anymore... That's when you really have no choice but to stand it...
With that said, Brokeback Mountain is an amazing movie... The cinematography is excellent and the acting is even better... Michelle Williams and Ann Hathaway both put in superb performances as Ennis's long suffering wife and Jack Twist's cold and mechanical ex-rodeo queen spouse respectively...
Again with that said, let's put aside all religious arguments against the theme and prejudices against homosexuals (as is now widely debated) to allow this movie to reach deep within us...
